Ugh real life really hits you in more ways than one and inopportune times. Job interviews, new baby on the baby, 2 year old at home, a lot to juggle! I will finally be completing my Bugwater GT review and givey ou some insight on how I finished the tournament.
Game 5 vs Adam Tricola's Grey Knights
Deployment: Hammer and Anvil
Mission: 4 Objectives
His List:
Inquisitor w/ Termie, Armor, Psycannon
Inquisitor w/ Termie, Armor, Psycannon

So I sit at 3-1 after day 1 and I am up against Adam Tricola. I frequent his website every so often to see how he does at other tournaments, and he doesn't disappoint. He attends the bigger tournaments on the East Coast and plays very well. He is playing my nemesis army, Grey Knights. I never do well against them usually, (well 2 of my first 3 games I did!) and he is a very good player.
His list is one I have not played before. I have never played 3 Knights and usually knights have Teleporters. 2 Stormravens is odd, but he explains his use of them (given to him for free as long as he uses them! What a deal!) he and his group arrive to the event late and our game gets underway 10-15 mins late. I hope this doesnt come back to bite me, but Tim assures we will get the full time in.
I get first turn and line up and prepare for him to get to me hopefully not fully intact! he deploys 1 Dreadknight on the right and 2 on the left while putting 1 full Strike Squad on each side with an Inquisitor.
First turn sees me do a couple wounds to 1 Dreadknight and Pin his Inquisitor Warlord squad with the Night Spinner. I foolishly move my Beasts up a little so I can ensure a Turn 2 charge. His turn sees him clear out some Beasts and thats about it.
My Second turn I shoot more of the weakened Dreadknight and kill it with the last squad possible to shoot for the turn! The Beasts charge a 10 man Strike Squad. One Voidraven arrives and targets the 6 man squad. Limits the number and cause a LD check which they fail.
**He wanted to argue that the Farseer did not receive the Fleet bonus because he cannot run. I tried to tell him this did not matter as for the rules of Fleet it says as long as each model has Fleet, you can reroll the charge dice. Bickering some more from him and then wants a judge. The judge ruled corretly and allowed the charge.***
In the charge my Int 6 Khymera and Beastmasters kill 3 Strike members! This sucks. I didnt expect 2 Khymera and 2 beastmasters to kill 3 dudes. This now puts my Flocks out of Int 5 Consolidation range and enables him to come in freely. His Hammers swing away and wreck face killing some Beastmasters, Flocks and my Farseer who tried to absorb some wounds (Yay 1 wound!). I need a 2 to stay and roll a 3. I run away and he cant catch me because of Termie Armor.
His 2nd turn sees him flame some Warriors with the Knight, and shoot my Beasts down to nothing left. His stormravens come in and fly right in front of me. I Intercept and kill 1 the old fashion way, with a pen 6 roll. The other one I believe blows a the Ravager up. Some Psycannons shoot at a Venom and blow it.
My 3rd turn, I shoot everything I can at his Dreadknight that is right in front of my right line. He absorbs many shots but finally goes down. Thank God! My other Voidraven had arrived and takes aim at his Stormraven. I fail to kill it.
His 3rd turn he flames more Warriors and continues to pound them with Storm Bolters. Storm Raven blows a Venom. I am running out of guys and running out fast. Flamers are devastating and I need him to fail saves rather than Invulns. Not a good situation.
My 4th turn, I blow his Storm Raven, and pour some ungodly amount of Poison into his Dreaknight, doing 2 Wounds. He is left with 1. My Voidraven shoots a missile and Lances at the 2 man Strike Squad left and he fails 2 3+ Saves from the Missile or the Lances (went to ground). Not a big turn for me.
His 4th, more flamers, more Bolters, more Psycannons. I Go to Ground like a champ and save many. His Flamer just keeps ripping through my infantry. He destroys the Dragons in one go.
My 5th turn, I have very little guns, and not many units to move. My far Voidraven begins his turn around so next turn he'd be able to fire. Guardians move over to claim an objective and I shoot my whole army at the Dreadknight. He makes all his saves.... I Snap Fire the last Splinter Cannon I have, 2 Hits, 1 Wound, he fails it!!!!!! (Sigh...) I actually had 1 squad able to shoot at the right squad and he made the LD caused buy the wounds I did. other Voidraven comes on and shoots the lances at the right Strike Squad. he fails the Look Out Sir for his Inquisitor, and dies. Lucky me!
His turn, more Bolters, more Psycannons. I make 2 LD 8 checks at the end to stay on my objective.
Game ends turn 5! Damn... I wish it could have gone on one more turn. I think I could have had enough guns to kill the right squad and taken the primary. We tied on Kill Points even though my opponent had 2 more than me. You need 3 more than your opponent to claim Kill Points. When it came down to Table Quarters, I had them. My Voidraven was controlling the Quarter with the right Strike Squad and I had my back two. My opponent didnt think fliers could control quarters, but in the mission packet it clearly states "Any unit may count their points toward the table quarters." He wasn't happy to find this out. Not happy one bit. He also was unhappy to find out units holding objectives dont count towards table quarters. He pretty much lost it at this point. I mean, you can be mad that is the case, but it wouldnt have mattered as I had the Quarter with a flier anyway.
You can see the write up of our game on his blog: Delusions of Grandeur
Overall a tough and frustrating game. Fail some 2+ saves Adam! Toughest game of the tournament thus far and it really came down to the wire. I sit at 4-1 now for the tournament and know I will be in for it in my last game. Hopefully it can be a nice, fun opponent!
Game 6 vs Alex Farrell's Triptide Tau!
My opponent was a local, and had attended the Bugeater GT in the previous 2 years as well as this one.
His List:
Command Suit w/ the fixins
x2 Bodyguards w/ Shield Drones
Aunshi
Riptide w/ FnP, Burst
Riptide w/ FnP, Burst
Riptide w/ FnP, Ion Accelerator
x6 Firewarriors
x6 Firewarriors
x6 Firewarriors
x6 Firewarriors
x6 Firewarriors
x6 Firewarriors
x4 Pathfinders
x4 Pathfinders
Razorshark Fighter w/ 4++ vs Intercept/Skyfire (forget which one)
Wow! So I go from fighting 3 Dreadknights to 3 Riptides! Fun for me! Honestly I was worried too much, as Riptides can be erratic and unreliable. The thing that sucked the most.... He had first turn. GREAT! The mission was 3 Objectives with Dawn of War Deployment and all objectives in No Man's Land.
Instead of doing a turn by turn, I will premise and say, we both just shot the shit out of each other. Here are some highlights:
-Nightspinner took out a squad of Fire Warriors a turn
-My Fire Dragon Exarch sniped out Aun Shi
-A Riptide i charged overheated his heavy Burst and killed himself
-He had a Firewarrior who made, no lie, 20+ saves. He made so many 4+'s and then a lot of 3+ Cover saves... Rediculous! This fire Warrior also rapidfired the Baron, and the Baron proceeded to fail his first 2++ and then fail his 3+ Ruin save and both Feel No Pain saves! So he died.... What a bitch!
-It came down to the final turn... Turn 7.
Turn 7 rundown. My opponent had a Riptide with 1 Wound, 1 Mega Fire Warriors (see above) and his Commander Suit with no Guards or Drones. His Riptide had been boss with saves and survived the previous turn. He moved to control the right objective, and killed some Warriors ready to fire. His lone Mega Fire Warrior was on another objective by himself. I had some Warriors on the far left objective and the far right was contested and the middle was claimed by the Mega Fire Warrior. His Command Suit shot and I went to ground with the far left squad and survived. He then needed an 11 to contest that objective otherwise the game is pretty much over. He gets an 11!!!!!!! So now its a game. He is controlling the middle and contesting the leftand right side at the end of his Turn 7.
My Turn 7. I shoot all of the Warriors, Guardians, Night Spinner, and Fire Dragons at his Riptide on the far right side. I leave a 3 man Warrior squad ready to run to the Objective to control it (they were 5'' away) so when I kill the Riptide they can controll it. Nah, the Riptide wasn't having it. He made all but 2 saves, but then made the Feel No Pains to save himself.... F$*(*#)@_(#$_(*$_(*#!!!!!!!! So now all I have left to shoot is the Gone to Ground left squad, my Ravager, and the 3 man squad. I shoot the Ravager at the Mega Firewarrior. He fails the 1 save i cause! Thank God! Well shit... Now the Gone to Ground Squad cant shoot the Riptide.... Dumbass on my part. Should have shot them first. So it comes down to the 3 man squad and their shooting. They shoot, 3 Poison hits.... NO BLASTER HIT! He rolls a 1... He needs to make a FnP and we draw.... He fails!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I win!!
My favorite game of the tournament was this game. Great opponent, great fun, lots of ups and downs throughout the game. It went 7 turns, and came down to the last dice roll! Thats an awesome game! He was great and took the game with a great sense of humor! Thanks Alex! I was worried about facing a doucher in my last game, but was very happy to have played Alex, thanks again.
So Overall, i finish with a 121/150 battle Points. This grants me tied for 3rd Place! I am also named the Tournament Runner Up! (2nd best General) i am stoked. I got a cool plaque, and a $75 gift certificate to the Game Shoppe (a local hobby store in Omaha).
Great great great tournament! i had a blast and had a great number of opponents. Some very tough games, some easy ones and a very good experience! I am hoping to come back next year for sure and bring a bigger crew! Thanks again for a great tournament and a great experience!

List I Am Using At The Moment
I will finish my Bugeater write ups in the next couple of days. I need to dig out the army lists of the final players.
Right now, thel ist below is one I have played a few games with. Overall I am happy with how it plays. I have won all of the games except 1 and that was to Tau on Hammer and Anvil Deployment with Kill Points and me going 2nd. Not a good combo, but alas, I lost by a single Kill Point!
So here we go:
Baron- 105
x5 Warriors, Blaster, Venom- 125
x5 Warriors, Blaster, Venom- 125
x10 Warriors, Cannon- 100
x10 Warriors, Cannon- 100
Beasts, Claw Fiend, x5 Khymera, x6 Flock- 250
Ravager w/ nightshields- 115
Voidraven. x2 Shatterfield, Flickfield- 175
Voidraven. x2 Shatterfield, Flickfield- 175
Farseer w/ Bike, Shard of WhatHisName- 155
x6 Bikes, x2 Cannons- 122
x6 Bikes, x2 Cannons- 122
x10 Warp Spiders- 190
x2 War Walkers, ScatterLaser/Bright Lance on each- 140
TOTAL 1999
I have kept my core the same for my Dark Eldar. Still have the Baron, some Warriors, and the Beasts. Ravager is a staple and the Voidravens (minus a missile each) are as well.
The Eldar are a bit different. I still have a Seer on the bike. Now however, he has the Shard which gives him +2 Strength, Rending, and in Challenges he has Instant Death and Fleshbane. He's base Lvl 3 so he can roll 3 times on the Runes of Fate table in hopes of getting Fortune, Doom, Guide, or Mind War. The other powers I think are shit. Making the Beasts Fearless is insane! Theyre greatest weakness of losing combat because of IDing the Flocks or not getting Rends is mitigated. Also, failing that LD 10 check on the first turn is gone as well! Plus Fortune works for the whole squad now can be very frustrating for an opponent! (In the five games however, I have not gotten Fortune yet!) The Farseer is beast mode and am glad he contributes to CC now as well.
As an aside, I see people that keep rolling on both the Eldar Disciplines and the BRB. I don't think you can do this. I have seen arguments for both sides and still think you cannot.
I realize the Eldar powers are Psychic Disciplines and you roll on them. But, are they not the codex powers? Are they not the "psychic powers listed in the codex?" I believe they are. I can see the argument for the double dipping, I just dont agree with it and don't think it is intended to be that way. I read it as you can pick the powers in the Codex or you can pick the powers from the BRB. I know Daemons and CSM have special rules, but their codex has a rule that they HAVE to roll on the God chart and then can CHOOSE to roll on the BRB. But the Codex rules make them different from what the FAQ states.
*** In the Eldar Codex (pg 70? or the page it desrbices the powers in the Codex) it gives you permission to roll on any chart available to the psykers. So this is useless and doesnt need to be read. I will keep it up as it is an initial thought and evidence i did think this way***
Ok done ranting, completing the list review now.
I have switched to Bikes in stead of the static Guardians. Though Guardians got a huge boost, I have 2 static troops in the Warriors. The Bikes work as excellent support units and last turn Denial units if needed. They are durable and can put a hurt on units be in MEQ, TEQ, GEQ, or light vehicles. They aren't bad in CC with Hammer of Wrath and the T4. They can finish off small squads in need be. Plus their mobility is great and I am now able to work down the field.
Warp Spiders were a favorite unit of mine last codex and 6th Ed. and they are even better in the new codex. They put out a ridiculous number of shots and can hurt any number of targets outside of AV 14. I like them for Anti-Flier, Anti- Vehicle, and Anti-Infantry. They are extremely fast and can easily be placed on the board or DS in. They are used to support the Beasts and Bikes and used to draw fire. With a 3+ Armor Save they are resilient as marines barring the T3 and they boas a LD of 9. They are a solid solid unit.
I round out the Eldar with War Walkers. This spot has been reserved for the Night Spinner since 6th Ed dropped. However, I think the Spinner got much worse even with the Strength increase. I miss the long range Barrage at times, but with the pressure I can put on with the Bikes, and the Spiders, I dont miss it as much as I thought. I think the Walkers with this set up are the most versatile and can damage anything needed to damage. They can do damage to infantry of any kind, they can hurt light transports or heavy. Plus, against fliers, the Str 6 lasers are nice to have and they can Twin Link the Lance if one of the Lasers hit. They can be quite good against fliers. Plus, without the Quad-Gun, I need some other potential flier-busting things in the list.
Overall the list I feel is pretty solid. 6 Troops with 42 scoring bodies. I have a good amount of Tank Busting, Infantry killing and with all the parts together, I can kill some fliers with the Bombers, Walkers, and the Spiders. The Beasts got a big boost with the Fearless from the Farseer. I think I have plenty of threats and target priority can be difficult. In my games, people shoot alot at the Beasts (for good reason) and the War Walkers. Rarely are the Beasts totally wiped first two turns, and the Walkers take away someo f the big guns that would otherwise go towards the Venoms or the Ravager.
What do you all think of this list? Solid? Critiques? Let me know

Can psychic powers be mixed and matched from the
psychic
disciplines
and those found in the Codexes? (p418)
A: No. You may select from the psychic powers listed in the
Codex as normal or swap them for a number of rolls on the
psychic disciplines tables.I realize the Eldar powers are Psychic Disciplines and you roll on them. But, are they not the codex powers? Are they not the "psychic powers listed in the codex?" Bugeater GT 1st Day Game Reviews
So below I will review the games I had at the Bugeater GT. I will add pictures to the post when I get home, as I am at work right now. I will do brief synopsis with highlights of the game.
So lets go!
Game 1 vs David Arimond's Grey Knights
His list:
Inquisitor w/ Term. Armor, Psycannon
x7 Terminators, Psycannon
x10 Grey Knights, psybolt x2 Psycannons, Hammer, Razorback w/ Psybolt
x10 Grey Knights, psybolt x2 Psycannons, Hammer, Razorback w/ Psybolt
x10 Grey Knights, psybolt x2 Psycannons, Hammer, Razorback w/ Psybolt
Stormraven Gunship
Dreadnought w/ x2 Autocannons, Psybolt
Dreadnought w/ x2 Autocannons, Psybolt
My initial thought was that the list was very 5th Ed, but Grey Knights ALWAYS give me trouble. They put out plenty of shots and with the choice to DS, they can be on me Turn 2. If he places everything, I need to destroy the Backs and the Dreads quickly. Everything in a GK list can be devastating to my armor and units so I can't assume victory.
The game was Dawn of War Deployment with objectives in each Table Quarter and 1 in the center of the table. He won the roll off to go first and gave it to me, Nightfighting was not in effect.
The first turn was pretty lame. I blew some arms off of one of his Dreads. Unfortnately for him he got zero reserves in second turn. I proceeded to blow the functional Dread up and 2 of his 3 Razorbacks.
His 3rd turn, he would get in all of his reserves. Not good for me. 2 of his 3 Strikes would scatter back into reserve and his Stormraven would get blown up by the Fire Dargon Exarch. His guys would do minimal damage to my army and I would return the favor by killing most of his army. He would call the game at the start of his Turn 4 as he wouldn't have enough units to contend with my army.
Crushing Victory for Dark Eldar! 25-0
I feel good after getting an easy win and am glad I could start the tournament off with a full victory! David was a great opponent and took the loss with a great attitude. It was really out of his control with the Reserve rolls and it kept going downhill from there. I would continue to talk wit David throughout the tournament and am glad to have met a great player.
Game 2 vs Chaos Daemons
His List:
Keeper of Secrets
Herald of Tzeentch, many goodies
Herald of Tzeentch, many goodies
Herald of Tzeentch, many goodies
x10 Plaguebearers
x20 Pink Horrors
Daemon Prince, wings Psyker lvl 3, other goodies
Daemon Prince, wings Psyker lvl 3, other goodies
Daemon Prince, wings Psyker lvl 3, other goodies
Aegis Defense Line
Going into the game I feel good about my win, and feel good about the matchup. I haven't had trouble with new Daemons before and I dont intend to start now. We were playing KPs and he had a little more than half the number I did. Unfortunately for him, T3 2W heralds are easy Kill Points and I have enough firepower to down his Princes.
The game was Kill Points with Vanguard Deployment. Nightfighting was in effect.
He wins the roll off and again decides to give me first turn. I deploy centrally because I want to be able to counter anything he throws at me. He deploys in his far corner, bubblewrapping his Keep of Secrets with the 20 Horrors and 3 Heralds. Princes will DS, along with the Bearers. Not at all what I was expecting, but he pretty much handed me the game with this deployment.
My first two turns I move forward and blast away all of his Horrors and Heralds. The Voidravens just did work on the Horrors. 3 Princes would come in, but 2 would scater into my Voidravens. The 1 that would stay would cause a Glancing hit on a Voidraven. I Torrent down the Prince and leave the keeper with 1 Wound. (He had the FnP gift, It Will Not Die, and the increased Invuln, so super frickin' tough!)
He other Princes would arrive, but just kill a Venom. I would table him Turn 4.
I would say my opponent took the loss well, but then I would be lying. For starters, we got into a huge argument about Look Out Sir! and how to properly take the wounds. Heres the situation:
My Voidraven shoots at his Horrors. he has 3 Horrors before a Herald. I cause something like 12 Wounds. He rolled all 12 of his saves at the same time. I told him politely he could not do that as he has a character. However, if he doesnt care if his herald dies, then go ahead and roll all of them. He argues that because they all have the same save, you roll them together. We go back and forth and pull out the BRB and the FAQ regarding Look Out Sir! and show him and he still doesn't see the point in doing it "my way" which is also called the correct way.
He wanted to Look Out Sir! after Wounds were calculated when you actually do it the opposite. I told him because there was 3 Horrors before his Herald, he had to roll 3 dice at a time and then proceed from there before going to the Herald. He pouted and finally agreed to do it my way but had a nice little attitude about it. I tried explaining it to him that you can't do it that way for a nuber of reasons, the BRB beign the main one. He pretty much just said whatever and continued to play.
Not a very good opponent, but a crushing victory for the Dark Eldar! 25-0!
So right now, I am sitting at a perfect 50-0 battle. I feel good about getting 2 perfect scores and am looking forward to my 3rd round opponent.
Initially I get teamed up with my buddy Mark who I drove to Omaha with. We talked with Tim and asked to pair us against someone else since we didn't drive 1600 miles to play each other. Also, we were both 2-0 and we were promised we wouldnt play each other until the 2nd day. Tim obliged and paired us up with different opponents. Very cool thing to do and I appreciate it Tim!
Game 3 vs Grey Knights
His List:
Librarian w/ Psyker lvl 3, lot of other equipment
Brotherhood Champion
x10 Strike Squad, Psybolt, x2 Psycannons, Rhino
x10 Strike Squad, Psybolt, x2 Psycannons
x7 Terminators
Stormraven Gunship
Dreadknight, Teleporter, Heavy Incinerator
A very small Grey Knight list and i was surprised it was 1850pts! I am liking the matchup as the only big threat is the Dreadknight and I think I have enough firepower to kill it.
The mission was 4 Objectives we could place and Hammer and Anvil Deployment. Nightfighting was not in effect. I win this roll off and take first turn.
I deplyo centrally while my opponent DS a Strike Squad with the Libby and puts the Brotherhood Champ and Termies in the Stormraven. He places the Strike Squad in the Rhino, combat Squaded and the Dradknight on the board.
I blow the Rhino, Pin one of the Squads and wipe the other 5 marines off the board. I cause 3 Wounds to the Dreadknight but could not finish him off first turn. I wipe the board with him Turn 2 and await the arrival of Reserves. Everything comes in.
*I make an error in allowing his Stormraven to come in Hovering to avoid being Intercepted. Mistakeo n my part and wasn't really thinking*
It made no difference as I tabled him Turn 4. Funny part of the game was the Baron was locked in a challenge with the Brotherhood Champion (his last model) and we eneded up killing eachother as the Bro Champ used his ability to kill the Baron! Great way to end it!
Crushing Victory Dark Eldar! 25-0
My opponent was great. He took the loss in stride and didn't give up, which I like! He was a light hearted guy and had a great attitude. Glad we got to play!
So after 3 games I am sitting at a pretty 75-0. i am hoping I can end the day with a 4-0 record and have a chance at winning it all!
Game 4 vs Zac's Necrons
His List:
Overlord, Scythe, Orb, Weave, Scarabs
Overlord, Scythe, Orb, Weave, Scarabs
Cryptek, Solar Pulse, Lance
Cryptek, Solar Pulse, Lance
Cryptek, Chronmenotron
Cryptek, Chronmenotron
x8 Warriors, Ghost Ark
x8 Warriors, Ghost Ark
Annihilation Barge
Annihilation Barge
Annihilation Barge
Ethereal
x11 Fire Warriors, Devilfish
Riptide w/ Ion Accelerator, TL-SMS
Whoa! Pretty damn good list. Lots of AV 13 to deal with, something my army with have trouble with. If I can get into CC with them I can take them out, if not, it will be a long game.
Game was 3 Objectives in No Man's Land, with Vanguard Strike Deployment. No Nightfighting, opponent takes first turn! (Not good for me. He almost gave me first turn too, but talked himself out of it! DAMN!)
His first turn he blows my Ravager (dumb placement on my part) and kills some Warriors. My first turn, I blow a Barge in CC with the Beasts who are sitting in a ruin. My Quad Gun does no damage to the Devilfish.
His second turn he turns his whole army at the Beasts and kills all of them but the Farseer, the Baron, and 1 Flock. I could not make a single 3+ cover save. Literally, I might have made 3, but none on double out Wounds. My second turn sees the Voidravens come in. They each drop their bomb, 1 on a Barge and another on an Ark. Both Pen, both Jinked away. Both Voidravens then shoot at a Barge and the other Ark. 2 Hits, 2 Pens on each.... Both Jinked away on each! WTF?!?!?!? Quad Gun blows the Devilfish. Blasters from the Venoms both hit but do no damage. Farseer charges a barge and kills it. Baron charges the other Barge, but does no damage.... Sad.
His 3rd turn hurts. He blows both Venoms, and kills the Baron (first str 7 Wound I fail), the Farseer, the Flock, and a bunch of Warriors/Guardians. My third turn sees a Voidraven fly off and the other take aim at an Ark. Again, Jinks away both the Glance and Pen.
The rest of the game sees him shoot down my army and him sit on 2 of the 3 objectives. He had his Warriors fully intact with the Teks and Lords. He had only 1 Ark Left. I could dislodge his Warriors from another objective as he made some obscene 10 saves on 4+ when 10 Warriors rapid fired his squad. he woudl go on to hold 2 Objectives to my 1. We would tie on Kill Points and Quarters.
Loss for the Dark Eldar 20-6!
A very tough loss. A very tough game. I can't control the Jink Saves he made and they made a world of difference. Not making any 3+ Cover saves sucked. It was a bad dice game for me and a good dice game for my opponent. Not to take anything away from him, he played peerfectly. I couldnt dilodge his troops nor get past his AV 13. He made many 4+ saves at the end to not cause a LD check to potentially go off the objective. Tough tough game.
At the moment I am sitting at 3-1 with 81 Victory Points at the end of Day 1. Not too bad. I wish I could replay the last game, but I can't and need to live with the loss. It is a tough pill to swallow.
I will add the last 2 days of the tournament and the results in the next post! I feel like this post is long enough... Hope you enjoyed!

The Bugeater GT Review
10 days ago I went to the Bugeater GT and am still recovering from the two 22 hour drives we did in 4 days! I first want to say it was a great tournament! Tim and the gang ran a very good tournament that was ontime and very well maintained. Below I will rate the different aspects of the tournament.
Bugeater Reviews:
Venue: A
Millard West High School is HUGE! Great place to hold an event and the gymnasium had ample space for both the Fantasy and 40k tournaments. It wasn't hot and musty like other GTs and remained at a great temperature. It was clean and the bathrooms were tidy. A coupel times they ran out of paper towels, but all is well. I would enjoy an extra stall or two, as they only had one, but it still worked out just fine. The space between table was great as well. There wasnt a line of 20 tables which would make it difficult to move around. They had round tables between the gaming tables for people to put armies and display boards on which made things very easy.
Organization: A
We ran 5 minutes late on the first day as some people had to trickle in, but other than the most minor hiccup at any tournament I have seen everything else ran ontime and how it was supposed to. Great job!
Terrain: A
Best terrain I have seen at a tournament. I like to brag that Great Escape Games has the best terrain, but the Bugeater GT rivals it. Every table had ample terrain. There were diagrams of how the terrain should be on a rond table, so if things got moved (which they tend to do) you can move the terrain back!
Missions: C+
They were simple and straightforward. However, they were a bit boring. All the missions seemed the same with Objectives/Kill Points/ and Table Quarters. I like themed missions and missions with some flare. They are simple and not confusing at all however. Some people complained about the Kill Points and how you needed 3 KPs to win the mission. I happen to like this. It does favor low KP armies, but they dont have much of an army anyway, so the other 2 mission parameters hinders them. I have a high KP army (16) and it didnt bother me. Table Quarters seemed weird in the fact that units holding objectives didnt count for Quarters. Talking with Tim and Roland (Head Judge) they said they would liekly be changing that for next year. I was hesitant on how Table Quarters were scored (total points in the Quarter) at first, but after playing it, I like that my fliers arent useless and can contribute to the victory conditions.
Food: N/A
I didnt eat any of the food so I dont want to rate it. However they did have debate kids running around, taking orders and selling baked treats. That was awesome and I took advantage. Some people grumbled about prices and the food, but as I didnt have any I will not rate it.
Prize Support: A++
Holy crap they gave out a lot of stuff! KR Multicases (8 I believe), Fantasy Flight RPG books, Dice bags, Bitz bags, gift certificates.... All of of it was amazing. I love the Best Army Medals and the plaques! I liek the fact you can bring something back with you to show people and keep rather than having some money to a game store. For such a small tournament size, they gave out more prize support than the BAO who had more than 2 1/2 time the people! Plus, all the prize support wasn't just gift certificates to their store.
Swag Bag: A+
I will put this in its own category. The swag I though was awesome. We got a DV model or models. I happen to get a Chaos Lord, my buddy got 5 Cultists, and my otherb uddy got 3 Chosen, so pretty sweet! We also got 12 BGT red/white dice made by Chessex! We received 5 Poker Chip Objective Markers with the BGT III logo on them. And my favorite thing, we got a BGT III patch. That will be going on my Sac City Punisher Jersey. Awesome swag! They know how to do it here!
Contact: B
My only gripe comes from the primer packets. They had some misinformation in the initial packets and I found some of the information confusing. I wish they could have came out with them earlier, but it is what it is. I thought the emails helped with things and they answered questions promptly.
Friday Night Events: C+
The only thing they had was a Combat Patrol and it wasnt bad. They raffled off some prizes which was great! I would like to see a narrative or Team Tournament or something. High rating for raffle prizes and the Combat patrol was fun.
Opponents: B
Most of my opponents were polite and fun to play against. I had 2 opponents who insisted on arguing rules and checking over every little detail of everything. It slows the game down and arguing rules like Look Out Sir! is very annoying. That is a basic game mechanic and people who don't know how to properly play it makes for a LOOOOONG game. My other 4 opponents were all pretty fun to play.
Overall: A
My experience was great. From the organization, to the prizes to the tournament overall. It was a great tournament overall and I will definately be in attendance next year!
I will be reviewing my games in a future post. I will try and post the pics I have of the vent as well.
